Drunk Driving

The number of drunk drivers involved in fatal crashes decreased 40% from 1982 to 1997, despite fluctuations in the total number of drivers who were involved in fatal crashes. After 1992, a 12% decrease in the number of drunk drivers involved in fatal crashes was noted, despite an 8% increase in the total number of drivers who were involved in fatal crashes.

* NHTSA defines drivers as "occupants of a vehicle who are in physical control of a motor vechile transport, or for an out-of-control vechicle, occupants who were in control until control was lost." Therefore, any driver in physical control of a motor vechicle, regardless of fault, is included in the number of drivers involved in fatal crashes.
